Can you overdose on vitamin C? This is the question that I asked myself once because I was quite concerned that I might be taking too much.
I’m sure that many people ask if you can overdose on Vitamin C. There are various studies conducted to really validate or confirm an answer for this particular query. Vitamin C is a nutrient that our bodies need for collagen production, immune function and wound healing. It is also known as ascorbic acid.
Naturally, it is found in fruits especially in citrus group and vegetables. Vitamin C is also important in aiding iron absorption. While we cannot set aside its importance to the body, it is also important that we know its benefits as well as risks and the right administration so that we can maximize its use.
Vitamin C is a water soluble supplement and excess amounts of it can be easily excreted through the urine. The daily needs of this vitamin to our diet vary from one person to another depending on age, gender, weight and overall health status.
There are side effects when taking Vitamin C in excessive doses. The sign that you should look out which tell that you have excessive intake of this vitamin is having loose bowel movement.
Once when I had a sore throat, I took about 9,000 milligrams of Vitamin C in one day. I never got a loose bowel movement. However, my sore throat disappeared in less than 12 hours. Of course, I had to keep on taking Vitamin C after that since I knew it was working.
My husband took 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C every hour that he was awake when he had a cold and his cold symptoms disappeared in 2 days. No loose bowel movement.
My 8 year old son took 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C every 2 hours that he was awake when he had a cold and his cold symptoms disappeared in 2 days. No loose bowel movement either.
So there, can you overdose on vitamin C? I think so, once your body reaches its saturation point! A friend of mine did and it was Loose Bowel Movement.
