I used to search for natural cough remedies each time someone in the family coughs. I hate drugs since I know that they have side effects like drowsiness and tummy troubles.
This year, it was quite bad for my family. We had to battle coughs so many times. It’s especially bad when you have young kids because when one gets it, most likely the others will, too.
Last June, it started with a cold for my 7 year old. Then he developed chest infection. He was coughing really bad especially at night time. In our community there had been some incidence of whooping cough so the worse his cough got, the more concerned I got.
We took him to the doctors but they couldn’t fix him. They gave him antibiotics but it didn’t work. They gave him a stronger antibiotic and he developed allergies with rashes all over his body. I was really scared since I used to have a sibling who would pass out with allergies and had to be rushed to the ER because of the need for oxygen.
Because the doctors couldn’t help him, I decided to take matters into my hand. I was inspired to make my own research.
I found some websites who taked about turmeric milk. I tried it with good results.
The recipe I followed was:
1 cup of milk
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
Mix and boil.
Add 1 teaspoon of honey.
Let cool for a little bit and give to child (warm not cold).
Do this about 3 times a day.
I researched more about this and I learned that turmeric has curcumin which is both an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. I even found one website by an assistant professor in a Harvard Medical School talking about turmeric milk and how his grandmother used to give it to him when he was young and how he got better with it quickly. http://arunshanbhag.com/2009/06/05/turmeric-milk/
Now, I’m quite a BIG believer of vitamin C and have found it to be very helpful with coughs and colds and flu, most especially in larger doses.
So, I made my own experiments with myself and my family as guinea pigs and what worked wonders for us was, at the sign of a cough:
1,000 mg to 2,000 mg of Vitamin C
720 mg of Turmeric
1,500 mg of Garlic Oil
We take it at least twice a day and it works wonders for us. I’m sure there are other natural cough remedies but this are the ones that work for us. We get our vitamins from Swanson Health Products. I am in no way affiliated with them. I just like their products.
